Abstract:

Introduction: Approximately 9.5% of sugarcane in Brazil and 71.7% in the state of Pernambuco are burned before harvest, which can have impacts on respiratory health. Objective: to identify the impact of sugarcane burning on the respiratory tract. Method: Integrative literature review, carried out in the databases and libraries CINAHL, BDENF, Medline/PubMed, Scopus, LILACS, Web of Science, Cocharane, Scielo and Google Scholar, to answer the guiding question: What are the impacts of smoke from sugarcane burning on the respiratory tract? The searches took place between June and August 2024, using the descriptors "sugarcane burning", "respiratory diseases", "air pollution" and "lung cancer". 968 articles were identified, of which 18 were analyzed and discussed. Results: Six studies showed an association between smoke from sugarcane burning and respiratory problems, three showed an increase in symptoms of asthma, pneumonia, decreased lung function and lung cancer, appearing in two articles each. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, respiratory infections, rhinitis and bronchiopneumonia appeared only once. Conclusion: It was concluded that the combustion of biomass from sugarcane burning of sugarcane has a positive relationship with the occurrence of respiratory diseases.
