Abstract:

It was objectived to evaluate the National Program of Iron Supplementation (PNSF) implantation in the city of Viçosa/MG and its impact in the non anemic infants from 6 to 18 months of age, assisted by the Health Family Teams (ESF). Interviews were performed with the graduated professionals from the ESF and also with the children’s mothers/guardians. The non anemic children who didn’t receive the previous supplementation (n=133) were supplemented with ferrous sulphate syrup from the PNSF (25mg of iron per week) for six months. There were carried out hemoglobin dosage, anthropometric evaluation and a socioeconomic survey before and after these six months. Children who ingested 75% or more from the prescript dosage were classified as high enrollment, while the others were classified as low enrollment, according to the mothers’ testimonial. In relation to the PNSF implantation in the city, it was observed that the distribution system was not always available to the priority group and there was lack of training and motivation from most of the Health Community Agents. About the priority group it was observed absence of PNSF advertisement, beyond politeness and sensibility only by mothers. Regarding the supplementation, children demonstrated low enrollment and the dosage wasn’t effective to prevent anemia. Therefore, the PNSF implementation revealed important operational barriers.
