Abstract:

Objective: Analysis and update of the epidemiological situation of meningitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b in the last 10 years in Rio Grande do Sul (RS).

Methods: Retrospective, descriptive study, which used the data system of notification of meningitis SINAN, stored in TABNET online base, covering the period 1999 to 2010. Confirmed case, age, diagnosis, and evolution were used as a selection criterion. Rio Grande do Sul state was analyzed, represented by 19 health centers. Z-test was used to compare proportions.

Results: In the studied period were reported 3043 confirmed cases of bacterial meningitis, among these 6.77% were caused by H. influenzae. The incidence rate of meningitis caused by H. influenzae, without considering age group, fell significantly (95,6%) after 1999, as well as mortality. Children under one year remain the most affected (52%). Lethality remains important in this group.

Conclusions: Results showed a positive impact of Hib vaccination strategies in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in the last ten years.
