Abstract:

The accelerated process of urbanization in the Amazon associated to changes in the pattern of natural resources exploitation have resulted in several types of environmental impacts. One of these impacts is the urban air pollution produced by the forest fire which alters the relationship between urban and rural areas, and as a consequence, reconfigures new vulnerabilities. This study aimed to analyzing the socio-environmental vulnerability in relation to forest fire and health effects in the urban area of Porto Velho, located at Brazilian Amazon. Data was analyzed using a synthetic indicator combining income and education aspects, infrastructure of the houses, environmental exposure to forest fire, and health effects. Our findings indicate that 51% of the resident population, around 157,000 inhabitants, is under high environmental vulnerability conditions. The analysis of the dimensions used to construct the synthetic indicator reveals an intense heterogeneity in terms of socio-environmental vulnerability in the urban area of Porto Velho city. These results point out the need for integrated actions from different government departments in order to enhance health promotion, ecological sustainability and also reduce social inequalities in health.
