Abstract:

Objective this study aimed to evaluate the influence of both the socio-demographic factors and the public dental service on the demand for emergency dental care. Data recorded between 2007 and 2009 were used to assess the following socio-demographic variables: dwelling place; age; gender; date and time of dental service delivery; social inclusion/exclusion index; and provision of dental service in the public health unit. Of the total population, 5.24% were found to seek emergency dental care during the study period, with the age group 20–49 years (63.84%) showing the highest demand for such care. Surgical procedures (54.90%) were the most prevalent. Users living in areas of great social exclusion were 4.15 times more likely to seek dental care (p<0.05). No statistically significant association was found between the gender or the existence of an oral health team and the demand for the emergency dental care (p<0.05). In conclusion, there is clear evidence that those living in vulnerable areas are more likely to seek emergency dental care.
