Abstract:

This study, originating from a multidimensional analysis on the category innovation in a Community Mental Health Movement of the Bom Jardim (Fortaleza, Brazil), aims to examine whether and how the experiences developed by this movement, is effectively an innovative model of practice in mental health care from the perspective of users of this service. The methodology adopted was a qualitative case study method based on a critical-interpretive approach, employing techniques such as in-depth interviews associated with focus groups. The participants included are users of this community mental health services at the moment of the field work. The categorization of the discursive material was conducted through a model based on the four main dimensions of psychiatric reform: conceptual; technical; legal and socio cultural. The results show: an emphasis on social individual person instead focusing the sickness; the host as a foundation of purposeful actions; the co-production of genuine dialogue with multiple stakeholders, and the construction of autonomy emphasizing the personal power. In conclusion, we can say that care practices developed into the Movement involve deconstructing the traditional model of mental health care, increasing new forms of citizenship, thus contributing to deinstitutionalization as conceived in this research.
