Abstract:

Objective: To study the association between homicides and drug trafficking and social indicators in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil in 2010. Methods: This is ecological study, based on cases of homicides and drug trafficking registered by the Civil Police of Bahia and social indicators. The negative binomial regression model was used to verify the association between homicide rate and drug trafficking and proportion of black men aged 15 to 49 years, with software R version 2.13.0. Results: There were 1391 homicides in 2010, giving a rate of 108,5 homicides per 100 thousand people. In association was observed that in neighborhoods with proportion of Black men aged 15 to 49 years over 60%, this rate increased of 89% (≥ 60% and ≤ 80%) and 87% (>80%), compared to neighborhoods with less than 60%. As for drug trafficking, there was an average increase of 40% in this coefficient in neighborhoods with 5 or more cases of drug trafficking, compared to neighborhoods with less than 5 cases, being statistically significant. Conclusion: The observed empirical evidences can contribute to the knowledge about the phenomenon of deaths by intentional homicides in the big cities and will be able to help managers, public security and organized civil society to face this problem.
