Abstract:

This article approaches on implications of the Brazilian semi-arid irrigation politics for life and health on territories it lies on. It is aimed to analyze irrigated perimeters as geopolitics strategy for the expansion of Brazilian agricultural boundary and “development” of northeastern semi-arid, in its relation with social determinants in health in farmer communities. It is about researche accomplished circa Chapada do Apodi, in states of Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte, between 2007 and 2011. Were adopted several drawings, techniques and research tools, as research-action, ethnographic study, questionnaire and laboratory exams, water contamination analysis, social cartography and focal group. It was identified that, in the context of agribusiness expansion, public policies of irrigation have brought consequences to health, labor and environment, with the implementation of Jaguaribe-Apodi Irrigated Perimeter, in Ceará. The context of social-environmental and resistanceprevious phase of the installation of Santa Cruz do Apodi Irrigated Perimeter, in Rio Grande do Norte, are expressive, which brings consequences to the health-disease process on farmer communities. It is important the evaluation of irrigation public policies to consider the impacts of perimeters on lifestyle, labor, health and the environment of these affected territories.
