Abstract:

This study was conducted to evaluate if caries severity is associated with malnutrition in preschool children. The cross-sectional study was nested in a retrospective cohort of 625 children aged 24-71 months attending daycare centers in São Luís, Maranhão. Hierarchical approach was used in the modeling data. The levels constructeddistal to proximal: 1.) Socioeconomic variables: economy class, mother’s educational level and skin color, 2) Variables Access 3) Variables: low birth weight (LBW) and exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months of age 4) Weight for height at 12 months 5) Caries severity and albumin values (Alb). The outcome was protein-calorie malnourishment. The prevalence of outcome was 5.0% (n = 34) and caries prevalence was 32% (n=189). In the first level, the variables were not associated with outcome, but the economy class was maintained until the final model (p =.07). The variables in the second and third levels were not significant (p> .20). At the fourth level, weight for height at 12 months was not significant but was maintained until the final model (p = 0.07, CI 0.88- 22.83). In the last level, caries severity was positively associated with malnourishment (p= 0.042, PR =1.17, CI 1.05 to 1.36). The association between caries severity and malnourishment suggest that oral health should be integrated to health attention policies to childhood.
