Abstract:

The article analyzes the senses and meanings that health professionals attribute to health education groups for people with type 2 diabetes. This ethnographic study was conducted with five professionalsa Family Health Team which worked in five health education groups for people with type 2 diabetes. To collect the information, we used participant observation, and semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using thematic coding technique. Three categories emerged: (1) \"is a way to educate them\": the groups as educational space and clinical follow-up; (2) \"they know that I will be there\": the groups as a resource to access the health system; and (3) \"serves as a self-help group\": after all, is a group for what? It is concluded that the studied groups are a hybrid of “therapy”, and “support” that, with its arrangements, enables to the informants (maybe to patients too) making others meanings to the health policies normatizations’, and to the difficulties of working with chronically ill persons. This hybridization allowed the creation of own outputs to the health work in a particular context of \"total life\".
