Abstract:

The objective was to verify occupational factors associated with job strain among teachers and if the associations would vary according to social support. This is a cross-sectional study with 842 teachersthe state educational network in a municipality of Southern Brazil. Occupational data were obtained through interviews. Socio-demographic and the Demand Control Support Questionnaire data were obtained through a self-answered questionnaire. Logistic regression analyses were performed with calculation of odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Working > 40 hours/week, having suffered violence at school and negative perceptions on work-personal life balance, earnings and the number of students in classrooms were associated with job strain. After stratified analysis, working hours per week and perception on the number of students in classrooms were statically significant only for the lower social support group. Job strain is associated with specific conditions of the teaching work and social support may moderate some of these associations.
