Abstract:

It presents briefly the evolution of knowledge about Chagas disease since its discovery by Carlos Chagas in 1909 until mid 1940. The saga of medical Pedreira de Freitas and his growing in-volvement in research in the area led to their contributions to the diagnosis laboratory - which offered security to epidemiological surveys of Chagas disease - and the resizing of the disease in Brazil and the Americas with its terrible social and economic impact. Its prophylaxis model proposal - based on ive purge the application of insecticide - was adopted nationally and internationally and allowed controlling the disease in Brazil and other countries. He devoted himself with equal intensity to renew the medical practice of teaching in the community being a pioneer in the implementation of preventive medicine in medical education in Brazil.
