Abstract:

Introduction: Several studies have identified misconceptions about the various aspects of Human papillomavirus (HPV), which can neglect behavior and risk the health. Purpose: assess the knowledge of men and women about HPV in the population of the city of Ipatinga-MG, and to evaluate socioeconomic factors and preventive measures associated with that knowledge. Methodology: cross-sectional study, with 591 subjects, aged greater than or equal to 18, living in the urban area. Stratified sampling by quotas, proportional to the number of individuals by age and sex in each of the eight administrative regional cities. Structured interview was conducted by forms. To assess the factors associated with knowledge about HPV were used in the univariate analysis, the chi-square test of Pearson or t–Student. Multivariate analysis was performed using binary logistic regression model. Results: Less than half (40.1%) of respondents said they know what is HPV and of these, 93.2 % had a minimum knowledge on the subject. Most information on the subject were obtained by TV (47.3%). Factors associated with reporting knowledge about HPV were being female, have secondary or higher education, using the particular health service, have heard or seen any campaign about HPV and know of the existence of vaccine against HPV.
