Abstract
This investigation, of qualitative nature, had as objective to be acquainted with the knowledge and practice of the community health agent in the universe of mental disturbance. Fourteen agents who perform in the Family Health Strategy of Sobral, Ceara were interviewed. We inferred that the construction of concepts on mental disturbance is a process influenced by subjective and socio-cultural aspects connected to solid living experiences. The community health agents use different parameters to judge a person with mental disturbances, such as normality standards or abnormal behavior and capacity to carry out factual judgments. Social isolation emerged as an important factor, having been reported, by different research subjects, as cause, consequence and as the mental disturbance itself. Fear, as consequence of strangeness caused by behavior of people with mental disturbances, was identified as an important obstacle to the performance of community health agents. The strategies adopted by these professionals, ruled fundamentally on dialogue, reveal preoccupation with social REPLACEion and the need for involvement from respective families in the care of people with mental disturbances.
