Abstract:

The aim of the study was to evaluate the knowledge, attitudes and practices on tuberculosis (TB), between transvestites and transsexual women (trans). It is a cross-sectional study with convenience sample (n = 124; 58 transvestites and 66 trans) carried out in the city of São Paulo, Brazil in 2014, with the application of adapted Knowledge, attitudes and practices questionnaire (KAP). The absolute and relative frequencies were calculated for all the interviewees, and the comparisons between the percentage distributions of the groups were performed using Pearson\'s Chi-square test, Fisher\'s exact test or its generalization, with a significance level of 5%. Most were young and not white. Transvestites had lower levels of schooling, reported more passage through prison system, and declared themselves to be sex workers more frequently, and little more than half were aware of the gratuity of TB treatment. For all interviewees, knowledge about TB was modest, permeated by misunderstandings associated with signs/symptoms and transmissible and preventive forms of disease, which influence their attitudes and practices in relation to the disease. It was concluded that health education actions do not reach their goals in TB control.
