Abstract:

This article analyzes the knowledge, attitudes and practices about tuberculosis of community health agents (CHA) in Recife, a municipality with high incidence rates and abandonment of treatment in Brazil. The cross-sectional study was conducted in a representative sample of CHAs using a standardized questionnaire. The frequencies of the variables related to knowledge, attitudes and practices were described and the association between satisfactory knowledge and appropriate practices with characteristics of the ACS was analyzed. Of the 401 eligible ACS, 385 (96.0%) were interviewed. The majority were women (87.5%), aged 40 years (66.0%) and performing the function for more than 9 years (74.5%). A percentage of 61.7% had satisfactory knowledge, and this knowledge (75.8%) was associated with adequate practices (p=0.008). Regarding attitudes, 97.1% of CHAs believed to be at risk of contracting tuberculosis and 53.2% attributed risk to function. A significant proportion of CHAs had satisfactory knowledge about tuberculosis and this knowledge was associated with appropriate practices. This result suggests the need for investments in training actions that may contribute to the improvement of tuberculosis indicators in the municipality.
