Abstract:

The growth of genetically modified crops planted area surface, and the commercial approval and to the environmental release of such crops, raised questions about the safety of these products. The entry into force of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, has meant that there was a need for the acquirement of information and training in this area for the implementation of policies on biosafety and for the national, regional and international governments decisions. This article presents two main strands policies on labelling of GM products (one adopted by the United States and another by the European Union) and the position adopted by Brazil and its current legislation on labelling and commercial release of genetically modified (GM).
