Abstract:

The occurrence of leptospirosis has challenged the epidemiology regarding the use of different analysis technologies for local geographical scales. This descriptive study aimed to identify spatial correlations of social and environmental risk factors and leptospirosis in Belém, Pará, between the years of 2007 and 2013. Epidemiological data were obtainedthe Information System for Notifiable Diseases, of the Pará State Secretary of Public Health and the environmental, demographic and cartographical datathe Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. Men, 20-39 years old, unknown occupation, mixed ethnicity, were the most affected. The Laboratory diagnosis (82%) and hospital care (67.22%), demonstrated satisfactory access to the health system. The numerical Kriging indicated highest concentrations of the disease in Guamá and Jurunas neighborhoods, in areas of lower altimetric measurements, near dikes. The Buffer technique showed higher concentrations of the disease in areas with no domestic solid garbage collection service (26%), sewage (22%), piped water (38%) and with unpaved street layout (20%) and street flooding (65%). The Moran technique demonstrated a direct spatial correlation between these variables (p = 0.01543). The general trend expressed the decrease of the disease. The data generated can help decision-making processes in public health.
