Abstract:

Riverine communities are exposed to mercury by high intake of fish in the diet. With the objective to evaluate the levels of exposure in the Tapajós region, also identifying the fish ingestion frequency, was held a study in adults living in riverine communities in the municipality of Itaituba/PA. Hair samples were collected for the determination of total mercury and data weekly frequency of fish intake. The mean concentration of total mercury varies 7,25μg/g (in 2013) to 10,80μg/g (in 2014), with no significant difference (p=0,1436). As for fish ingestion frequency, most of the individuals showed a high consumption so much in 2013 as in 2014. High levels of total mercury were observed only in those with high consumption of fish in both years. We emphasize the importance of continued monitoring of exposure levels in humans, basing itself in levels of tolerance 6μg/g recommended by World Health Organization, and research about the consumption of fish for the control and prevention strategies improvements be made to.
