Abstract:

OBJECTIVE: To describe the prevalence and to analyze factors associated to the growth delay in children at the age of five.
METHODS: The baseline study analyzed 2040 children at the age of five verifying possible association between growth delay (index height/age <_ 2 scores Z) and variables in six hierarchical blocks: socioeconomic, residence characteristics, sanitary basis, maternal variables, biologic and access to health service. A multivariable analysis was performed by Poisson regression with the robust standard error option, obtaining adjusted prevalence ratios with a CI of 95% and its respective significant probability values.
RESULTS: Among non binary variables, there was a positive association with the kind of roofing and number of household members and negative with income per capita, mother’s schooling and birth weight. The adjusted analysis also indicated as significant variables water supply, visit from the community health agent, birth delivery location, hospitalization for diarrhea, hospitalization for pneumonia and birth weight.
CONCLUSION: Several factors were identified as risk for linear growth retardation pointing to the multi-causal aspects of the problem and raising the necessity of its control by the different hierarchical government agents.

KEY WORDS: Growth structure delay; malnutrition; multivariable analysis; hierarchical variables model.
