Abstract:

Objective: Compare livelihood, work and health conditions with special interest in mental health of hospital cleaning workers outsourced in Spain and Brazil. Method: Transverse and quantitative investigation carried out in two public general hospitals, one in the Brazilian and the other in Spain city. 78 hospital workers were interviewed in Brazil and 39 in the Spanish, using a questionnaire including several scales already validated; Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ) and Self Reporting Questionnaire. Results: Spanish workers are of an older age, caucasian and with a family higher income scale, they also show smaller SRQ scores in all dimensions. They Smoke more, they have a higher sight deficit and allergies in comparison with Brazilians. As far as work conditions, Spaniards work for a longer time in the same position, smaller work shifts and they do not have to take two jobs as it´s observed in more than a quarter of the workers at SHL Brazilian hospital. More so, almost 40% of them consider their work very intense and with autonomy. Conclusions: It is understood, this way that Brazilian workers are subject to harder working, living and mental health conditions more precarious compared to Spanish workers, only a few aspects of health conditions were worse in Spanish workers, which may probably be related to their higher ages.
