Abstract:

The objective of our study was to characterize the amount and the variety of fruits and vegetables (FV) available in Brazilian households in 2008-09 and 2017-18 and according to regions and income classes in 2017-18. We used datathe Household Budget Survey regarding household availability of FV, and in 2017-18, Brazilian regions, and six income classes. The annual per capita amount purchased of each food item was transformed into a daily amount. We analyzed the absolute (gram/per capita/day) and the relative amount of each type of FV in Brazil (both years) and according to regions and income (in 2017-18). It was verified a low amount of fruits and vegetables purchased in Brazil (54.4g e 42.7g in 2008-09; 49.7g and 37.4g in 2017-18, respectively) and in all regions and income classes. The South presented the highest purchased amount while the North the lowest one; the quantity of FV increased as income increased. Six types of fruits (“prata” banana, apple, “d’água” banana, “pera” orange, watermelon, and papaya) and three types of vegetables (tomato, onion, and carrot) represented about 50% of the total acquisition in Brazil, which was similar in all analyzed strata. The acquisition of fruits and vegetables in Brazil was low and presented low variety. This scenario was regardless of region or income class.
