Abstract:

The study aimed to analyze the temporal trend the profile road traffic accidental injuries and death in Brazil from 2001 to 2021, using data on hospitalizations and deaths. Data from land transport accidents (ICD-10 codes V01-V99) from the Hospital Information System and the Mortality Information System were analyzed. Hospitalization and mortality rates were calculated by sex and age group, and the proportional distribution according to race/color was assessed. The temporal trend was verified using the Prais-Winsten model. Hospitalization rates in Brazil increased from 51.2 to 84.0 per 100,000 inhabitants between 2001 and 2021, with a male predominance. Deaths increased from 2001-2006 to 2007-2012 and then decreased. The highest rates were among men. For hospitalizations, there is a significant upward trend in thirteen capitals and a downward trend in five. For mortality, no series showed an increasing trend, and 11 series showed a decreasing trend. Despite data indicating that the country is progressing in preventing traffic deaths, many capitals still have increasing hospitalization trends, highlighting the need for investment and intensification of prevention efforts to meet global and national safety and development goals.
