Abstract:

Objective: To describe the male participacion on a physical activity program for the senior citizens from the south of Brazil on the period of ten years (2003-2013). Method: The data of the study have been extracted from a database and assessed by the descriptive statistics, inferential and assessment of the thematic contents. The first moment of the study was longitudinal (from 2003 to 2013) and had 163 senior participants and, on the second moment was transversal, regarding the year of 2013, and counted with 45 seniors. Results: the male participation was, in average, 3,5 times smaller than the female in all years assessed and the most practiced modality was swimming. On the year of 2012, the average of the senior men was 68±7,8 years. Most of them are married, have high education, good economic situation, positive self perception of health, have one or more diagnosed diseases and does not do any other physical activity out of the program. According to the seniors, the reasons of the incoming most quoted was the search for quality of life and health e, of incoming, the aquisition of the taste for the practice of physical activity. Conclusion: the comprehension of the profile of theses individuals and of the reasons that move them are important tools to decode the question and help to define public politics directed to this population.
