Abstract:

Brazil has hosted mass gatherings (MG) of different natures. Participants are subject to different health risks. This work aimed to systematize the main relationships between mass gatherings and the occurrence of disasters that are of interest to the Public Health. Three methodological strategies were used: (1) review of the literature of MG, with systematic search (2) systematization of the main information about MG (3) selection and systematization of the references which treat the subject disaster in their keywords, title or summary. There were 28 selected references, with a predominance of scientific papers, review of literature, references published in 2012 and sports event. The main subjects discussed were the planning and surveillance systems. There was little analytical information about MG. Non-communicable events wereimportant to the occurrence of disasters with emphasis on those related to the crowds. It is important to consider the risk of disasters when planning the MG, aiming to increase the responsiveness, considering strategic areas such as emergency medicine, surveillance of communicable diseases and vectors, food security and health services security, environmental health and laboratory. Analytical research and record of the experiences gained in MG should be pointed out as important strategies to disaster risk reduction.
