Abstract:

Urban violence is a topic widely discussed in different sectors of society, either by its reflection on indicators of public health, influence in everyday life of individuals or the presence of casualties in health services. This study compares differences in victimization among genders from maxillofacial injuries as markers of urban violence. This is a cross-sectional study with data collected in three hospitals of reference for this kind of injuries in Belo Horizonte-MG, between January 2008 and December 2010. The analysis included descriptive statistics and multivariate with logistic regression. There were records of 7.063 victims, 55.1% of interpersonal violence. The majority of victims were males (71.2%). In male victims aggressions with gunshoting, stabing of knife and motorcycle crashes were more frequent them aggression without use of a weapon (slaps, punches and kicks). The multiple fractures were the type of injuries that best characterized the profile of victimization for males compared to soft tissue injuries (p<0.001; OR 2.78; IC 95 %; 2.31; 3.36). Gender is an important factor in the victimization by maxillofacial injuries and urban violence.
