Abstract:

The study aimed to evaluate the impact of juice consumption before 6 months of life on Body Mass Index (BMI) for Age and food consumption at preschool age. Longitudinal study with a sample consisting of mothers and their children (n=103) at the ages of 6 months and between 3 and 6 years. Weight and height data were measured and converted to z-score of BMI for Age. To assess food consumption, the Child Food Frequency Questionnaire was used. Chi-Square and Student\'s t tests were used to compare groups. There was no difference in anthropometric parameters between preschool children who received juice or did not receive before six months. Those who had earlier juice introduction (≤150 days of life) had more frequent consumption (≥1x/day) of artificial juice (63.8% versus 35.7%; p=0.028) and stuffed cookies (21.3% versus 14.3%; p=0.001) at preschool age. Children who received artificial juice before 6 months had a higher prevalence of soda consumption between 1 and 4 times/week (69.2% versus 27.4%; p=0.014), but a lower prevalence of chocolate drink consumption at least 1x/day (38.5% versus 69.4%; p=0.027). Thus, children with early introduction of juice presented higher consumption of sweet foods and sugar-sweetened beverages in the preschool phase.
