Abstract:

Aim
To determine patients‘ knowledge about their medications.
Method
Cross-sectional observational study. Knowledge was measured by a valid and reliable questionnaire (CPM-PT-PT), to the patients attending community pharmacies participating in the study requesting one or more drugs in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. Knowledge was determined on four dimensions: therapeutic target, process use, safety and maintenance of the medications that patient use.
Result
35 pharmacies participated, yielding 633 valid patients. The 82.5% (95% CI: 79.3% -85.3%) did not know the drug they use. In all items, there was a high percentage of patients with incorrect knowledge, with emphasis on precautions (44.7%). The dimension that fewer patients was known is "drug safety" (1.9%).
Conclusions
8 out of 10 patients in the population do not know the drug they use. Most lack of correct information corresponds to the "safety" of the drug.
