Abstract:

This article aims to discuss the commercialization and the abortive use of misoprostol in the context of illegality that exists in Brazil. The information presented was collected through case studies with two young women who committed medical abortion, successfully and unsuccessfully, respectively, and two adult women who have closer ties with women who used misoprostol. The results were grouped around the reconstruction of the itinerary, mediation and social networks used by women, considering two aspects: the decision of having an abortion and the purchase of misoprostol. The study confirms the hypothesis that the diffusion and expansion of non-hospital use of misoprostol are associated with the decision of women who seek lower costs, lower risks to their health and privacy. Additionally, the study allows exploring the interpretation that this increase in consumption is also linked to the incorporation of the drug to a set of goods that are illegally traded in Brazil, in different ways and in different contexts. As a result, women are exposed to different degrees of vulnerability depending directly on the itineraries they developed, types of mediation used and social networks they belong to, resources through which women and men build the possibility of access to abortive use of misoprostol, which may or may not be successful.
