Abstract:

The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence and correlates of missed opportunities for diabetes mellitus opportunistic diagnosis (PDO) in Afrodescendant communities from Vitoria da Conquista, Bahia. Population-based cross-sectional study based on probability sample (n=797). Among these, 548 were eligible for this analysis considering the risk criteria: age over 45 years old, increased Body Mass Index and hypertension. The prevalence of PDO was estimated in 42,6%. Logistic regression indicated the following factors were statistically associated: good/very good health conditions self-assessment, not measuring blood pressure in the last year, not consulting with a physician in the past twelve months and poor access to health services. The high prevalence of PDO was associated with factors related to low utilization and poor access to health services. Actions for the diagnosis and prevention of diabetes should emphasize populations at risk, including better education and training of family health program team, and improvement of secondary care at the basic health care units. Better integration between primary and secondary level health care actions can positively impact on early diagnosis, treatment and reduction of potential complications associated with the diabetes in this population.
