Abstract:

Modern-day slavery is one of the most unfair and persistent social problems in Brazil. Faced with the need to implement national worker´s health policy this paper discusses contemporary slavery as a public health concern, highlighting possibilities from health services to surveillance and integral care to that specific working population.
An exploratory qualitative research was carried out based on "social construction of reality" supported by scholars such as Lenoir, Luckmann and Berger. The investigation consisted of a theoretical review about modern-day slavery in national and international scene in humanities affairs, social sciences and public health field. It was conducted an analysis of social and political practices to face modern-day slavery in Rio de Janeiro State. Workers, social movements and public institutions actors have been interviewed.
Theoretical and practices aspects of Modern-day slavery and its relation with Public Health came about as a result of this research. It also shows that Public Health has its role and capability to strengthen health surveillance as well as to provide comprehensive attention to workers submitted to modern-day slave labor.
