Abstract:

This work presents and analyzes the main databases about mortality due to disasters in Brazil. The comparison among the main databases shows that there is no data reliable and sufficient to understand the complexity of disasters in the country. With the current databases it is not possible to affirm if disasters and mortality due to disasters are increasing in Brazil, because there are variations in the intensities of the events that occur each year. The available information shows the importance of the mega disaster occurred in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro in 2011, especially in the Nova Friburgo municipality. In this case the disaster affected the various age groups in both sexes in different ways, the age group 5-9 years old was the most affected among men and women, and age groups 20-24 years old (for women) and 30 to 34 year old (for men).
