Abstract:

This paper addressed the mortality rate for elderly people in Araraquara-SP from 2006 to 2011. It was done an epidemiological descriptive study, according to data from the National Mortality Information System and the Foundation State System of Data Analysis. It was estimated the ratio between mortality rates by point (R) and by 95% confidence interval (IC95%). Approximately 60% of elderly people had a low level of instruction, and 76% of them died at the hospital. For the period 2006-2008 it was observed the most common causes of deaths as circulatory, respiratory, and cancer; with, respectively, a significant difference among males and females, as R=1.41 (IC95%:1.24-1.58), R=1.49 (IC95%:1.22-1.76), and R=1.79 (IC95%: 1.40-2.18)]. For the period 2009-2011, according to circulatory diseases, the ratio was R=1.18 (IC95%:1.03-1.33)], and the difference was significant for the respiratory and cancer diseases, as R=1.33 (IC95%:1.11-1.55), and R=1.94 (IC95%:1.53-2.35), respectively. The fourth and fifth causes of deaths were diabetes mellitus and external causes. The pattern of mortality found emphasizes the importance of actions aimed at reducing the major causes of death such as increasing the coverage of influenza vaccine and control of hypertension and diabetes mellitus.
