Abstract:

This study aimed to analyze the association between multimorbidity and depression and quality of life in elderly in the Family Health Strategy (FHS), by cross-sectional study with elderly enrolled in FHS of Senador Guiomard, Acre State, Brazil. It was used the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) and the Quality of Life Questionnaire (WHOQOL-Bref). The differences of the descriptive variables by elderly with and without multimorbidity were estimated by Pearson‘s Chi-square test and the associations between multimorbidity and depression and quality of life were estimated with logistic regression technique. It observed that elderly with depression accounted for 27% of the sample, being this disease in greater proportion among the elderly with multimorbidity compared to those without. The elderly with multimorbidity had twice more likely to be depressed. Similarly, individuals with multimorbidity were more likely to worse quality of life in the domains physical, psychological, social and in the overall quality of life (all p≤0.010), except in the environmental domain (p=0.493). Thus, the multimorbididity in the elderly is associated with the presence of depression and worse quality of life, imposing the FHS the challenge of ensuring the elderly to live the senescence without suffering and reduced quality of life.
