Abstract:

The representations on youth vary historically and culturally. In the Upper Rio Negro, live Indigenous groups with more than three centuries of contact with the non-indigenous world. In the last years, the male rites of initiation were suppressed and the formal school was introduced. These events must have generated resignifications in the representations of different phases of the life. This work intended to understand the construction of the indigenous’ representation about youth; how do they correlate with the other phases and how these representations contribute to configure social practices structured around this social group. Several mythical stories dealing with intergenerational relationships have been reviewed; they were correlated with the terms designative of the diverse stages of life, with other local narratives, and with data from participating observation. The study concludes that the representations on youth have been configured by the social roles of the initiating/initiated, currently, in a contradictory fashion, under a generic and prolonged category of student, emptied of its own sociologic by-laws, stretching the liminary condition of this phase of life.
