Abstract:

Narratives of intimate partner violence against women
This qualitative research aimed to investigate the women’s lifetime experience of violence perpetrated by intimate partners. 195 women aged 15 to 49 living in an economically vulnerable area of Brazil’s capital were interviewed. The study adopted a technique called Discourse of the Collective Subject, which is based on the Theory of Social Representation. Thirty two women’s discourses were grouped by similar narratives of violence following the recommended DCSs technique. These discourses were organized into seven major categories, which synthesize their central ideas. The most prevalent discourse was the Engineering of Intimate Partner Violence, with eight discourses where 114 women (58,5% of the key expressions) described what they perceived as the building elements of violence. Other discourses were: Child Abuse Histories, with 77 key expressions (39,5%), Silent violence or silenced violence, with 43 key expressions (21%), Women’s Years of Potential Life Suffering, which also had 43 key expressions (21%), Now is a new time despite the sorrow (N = 39; 20%), Talking about violence ( N = 35; 18%), and Violence is a language (N = 34; 17,4%). The study shows the multiple forms of violence against women committed by intimate partners, who deny the women’s condition of “subject of rights” in intimate relationships.
