Abstract:

The objective of this study was to analyze the trend of neonatal mortality in Brazil2007 to 2017. It is an ecological time series study, carried out with datathe Mortality Information System and the Live Birth Information System, analyzed using regression of Prais-Winsten. There was an average neonatal mortality rate of 9.46 / 1,000 live births in the period, with a reduction of 2.15% per year. There was a greater decline in early neonatal mortality, compared to late. There is a growing trend of neonatal deaths among preterm neonates, with extremely low birth weight, born by cesarean delivery, children of mothers over 30 years of age and education over eight years of study. Regarding the causes of death, there was an increasing trend of deaths due to congenital malformations and infectious diseases. Still, there was a growing trend in preventable deaths due to adequate care for women during pregnancy and for other causes that are clearly avoidable. Despite the general reduction in deaths, it is necessary to intensify public policies for adequate assistance to women during pregnancy to ensure improvement in the other indicators analyzed, such as mortality among preterm newborns, with low weight and those born by cesarean delivery.
