Abstract:

Cervical cancer is the third most common cause of cancer among women worldwide and the Pap test is the best screening method for its detection. This study assessed the prevalence of non-participation in this test among pregnant women and to identify associated factors. The sample included pregnant women older than 25 years who attended at least one prenatal care visit in Rio Grande, Brazil, in 2013. Multivariate analysis was performed using Poisson regression and the effect measure was prevalence ratio (PR). Among 1,474 pregnant women included in the study, 21.6% (95% CI 19.5–23.7) were not screened. In the adjusted analysis, was found PR=2.14 (1.35–3.38) among non-screened mothers with 0-4 years of schooling compared to those with 12 years or more. The PR=1.38 (1.10–1.73) and 1.39 (1.04–1.84) among those reporting previous abortion and alcohol use during pregnancy compared to those who did not report them. Finally, PR=1.35 (1.03–1.77) among those attending 1–5 prenatal visits compared to others. It is evidenced a high proportion of pregnant women non-performing Pap smears and non-compliance with basic recommendation by the Brazilian Ministry of Health. Health professionals should reinforce the need for this exam and look at household level for pregnant women with profile as described here.
