ABSTRACTThis article aims to analyze critically the state of the art of scientific production on the practice of counseling in nutrition of infants younger than two years of age, discussing about the potential and obstacles while strategic challenges for implementing practices of healthy nutrition. It is a bibliographic study, having as the core interest the advice on infant nutrition. The majority (58.1 %) of the analyzed articles was published between 2008 and 2011. The educative actions of counseling on infant feeding were directed to health professionals and caregivers of children under two years of age. As potential of the practice of nutritional counseling stands out: improvement in the performance of health professionals, adopting healthy eating practices by caregivers and improvement in the nutritional status of the children. As obstacles, stands out: lack of training of caregivers and professionals about the healthy complementary feeding, difficulty regarding the practice of counseling by a health care professional. These evidences reaffirm the importance of incorporating the advice on infant feeding, as permanent practices, policies for child health care.
