Abstract:

The study objective to analyze the nutritional deficit of children from a large city in the interior of Bahia and environmental factors, maternal and infant characteristics associated. Assessed information from duo mothers and children under four years of a birth cohort (n = 793). The malnutrition was defined by anthropometric index height-for-age (H / A), at a cutoff of -1 z-score relative to reference the Multicentre Growth Reference Study, 2006. The variables studied were: the characteristics of children (birth weight and multiple births) and maternal (age at birth, education level, parity and performing prenatal) and environmental factors (floor covering and ceiling residence, source of water consumed, indoor plumbing water, water used for consumption and possession of refrigerator). Logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with nutritional deficit. Nutritional Deficit occurred in 24.6% of children (5% of malnutrition and 19.6% risk of malnutrition). Underweight at birth, inadequate prenatal care, poor coat the floor of the home and no indoor plumbing water were predictors of malnutrition among children in the study. Factors associated with malnutrition ratify the contribution of social issues in the genesis of malnutrition.
