Abstract:

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the temporal trend of coverage and nutritional status of Indigenous children (Kaiowá, Guarani, and Terena) under five years of age in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, from 2006 to 2019.
METHODOLOGY: Ecological time-series study using secondary data from the Dourados Base Pole (MS). Monthly and annual coverage of the nutritional status of children under five years monitored by the Indigenous Food and Nutrition Surveillance System were assessed. Nutritional diagnosis was based on the weight-for-age index, classified using Z-scores. Trends in the prevalence of very low weight, low weight, and high weight were estimated using Annual Percent Change (APC) and confidence intervals through Joinpoint regression.
RESULTS: The mean annual coverage remained above 90%. The prevalence of very low weight remained stable. Low weight showed a significant decrease until 2011 (APC = -6.5), followed by an increase until 2019 (APC = 2.1). High weight increased significantly until 2016 (APC = 7.5), remaining stable thereafter. Despite high coverage, indicators remain unfavorable compared to non-Indigenous children, highlighting persistent social and health inequities.
