Abstract:

Psychiatry was born just over two hundred years ago as a special kind of medicine comprehending the fields of medicine, natural history (biology) and philosophy (humanities) and offering institutional care of the insane. It began by the rupture with the exclusion apparatus of the marginalized people in the Old Regime, characterized by an epistemic pluralism.
In this article we discuss the contribution psychiatry can make today, just over two centuries and some important conceptual and institutional rearrangements later, well established in the academic world and socially legitimized, in another moment of rupture, in which new paradigms of care are established valuing the contextual and intersubjective situation of mental distress. Redesigned in a contemporary vocabulary the pinelian intuition about the epistemological and ethical challenge of knowledge and practice of mental suffering care, it will be defended the thesis that to the psychiatric knowledge and practice is necessary to articulate the plans of body, experience and narrative in an ongoing dialogue.
