Abstract:

The object of this study is the occupational stress of female police officers in Rio de Janeiro. We used the qualitative approach (interviews, focal groups and observations) to seek their perceptions about gender differences in the performance of police work, the relationship between occupational stress and health problems and the strategies used to mitigate this type of stress. We had a total of 42 participants between female officers and non-officers, and operational and health professionals. The participants relate the stress to their daily work, cite a number of symptoms and indicate that family relationships are affected. Their stress originates primarily in management and organizational issues. Gender discrimination, sexual and moral harassment are also perceived as stressors. Stress appears more strongly among the officers in commanding roles and operational activities are perceived as more stressful because of the greater risks. Physical exercise is the most effective strategy to prevent the consequences of stress. There is a need for organizational and managerial changes from the perspective of gender and investment in preventive measures that can reduce the consequences of stress within the police force of Rio de Janeiro.
