This study evaluated the oral care and oral hygiene practices in the long-term care institutions of Belo Horizonte. A semi-structured questionnaire was handed out to the managers of the 37 philanthropic and 30 private institutions and collected after 1 week. The data was compared by the tests chi-square and Fisher´s Exact (p<0.05). 81% of the questionnaires were answered. Most of the private (74.2%) and of the philanthropic (87%) institutions do not have a dentist in their health staff (p=0.21). The location, length of fundation, the type of institution and the number of residents didn't interfere in the presence of dentist (p>0.05). 67% of the philanthropic institutions with a consultation room had a dentist, and there was no dentist where there was no consultation room. Even without consultation room, 13% of the private institutions had dentists. 69.6% of the philanthropic institutions direct the elders to public health centers; as 58.1%of the private institutions direct them to their own family members. Greater percentage of the private institutions adopted systematical oral hygiene procedures (p=0.01), there was high variation between the stated conducts. There is a need to incorporate a dentist to the health staff of the institutions and the systematization of the oral hygiene practices.Key-words: Health services for the aged, oral health, homes for the aged.
