Abstract:

Orthothanasia proposes the suspension of medical procedures to patients in terminal state, which leads to a natural end of life, relieving symptoms that lead to suffering. In this process, professionals such as doctors, nurses and psychologists, interact with patients and their families. Therefore, it is desirable that since undergraduate programs, these professionals have training courses targeted to properly handle this demand. The purpose of this qualitative study was to evaluate the orthothanasia knowledge of undergraduates in medical, nursing and psychology courses in a university. Through triggering questions was conducted semi- structured interviews with 22 students. The interviews were recorded and transcribed for content analysis, and main themes identification. It was possible to identify 3 categories: knowledge about orthothanasia, who should be involved in this process and feelings experienced when facing death. The data demonstrated that students have a little knowledge about the subject, they consider important the family involvement in the orthothanasia decision and they also do not feel prepared to face the death. The conclusion points towards the need to change the focus on end-of-life matter in the health care undergraduate programs in order to better prepare the future professional.
