Abstract:

Introduction: The depictions of mental disorders in music are an under explored topic within the medical field. This is despite the impact of the reproduction of stigmatizing representations. Objective: To describe the meanings and uses of the theme of madness within the Spanish punk music (1981-2010) as a basis for comparisons with other countries and musical genres. Method: Content Analysis. 3.653 song lyrics were reviewed looking for the words ‘crazy,’ ‘madness’, or other related terms. 174 songs were identified and subsequently analyzed. The code book contained 28 codes representing 4 categories: uses and meanings of ‘madness’; main song topic; ‘crazy’ in set phrases; and ‘embodied madness’. Findings: Madness as unpredictability or loss of control was prevalent. In set phrases, links between madness and loss of control were recurrent too. The depictions of ‘crazy’ characters (‘embodied madness’) were less frequent than the use of \'crazy\' as a qualifying term. Discussion: Comparisons with previous literature findings suggest that the senses of madness as ‘pathology,’ ‘loss of control,’ and ‘opposition to reason’ could be universal. The identified contents were framed in the context of Spanish punk\'s identity. So, the theme of madness emerges as a sign of identity, a manifestation of otherness.
