Abstract:

Objective: To investigate the association between overweight/obesity and socio-demographic, behavioral and clinical factors in climacteric women. Methods: Cross-sectional study with sample of 253 menopausal women who answered questions about socioeconomic and demographic factors, general health, dietary and behavioral habits. For the assessment of nutritional status, we used body mass index (BMI). To assess the quality of life it was used the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS). The Sexual Quotient (QS-F) – Female Version was used for evaluation of sexual performance. It was used bivariate analysis and hierarchical multiple regression to identify factors associated with overweight and obesity in menopause. Results: By the analysis of BMI, 30.8% were overweight and 35.2% were obese, totaling 66% of excess weight. In multiple analysis, not having a house, severe symptons by evaluation of MRS, use of medicine for continuous treatment and having done any type of diet were all associated with overweight and obesity. Conclusion: Nutritional intervention aimed for weight control and changes in lifestyle may result in important benefits related to health and quality of life of climacteric women.
