Abstract:

Palliative care emerged as a humanitarian philosophy of caring for terminally ill patients, relieving their pain and suffering. These care predict the action of an interdisciplinary team, where each professional recognizing the limits of their performance will help the terminally ill patient has dignity in his death. This article deals with the issue of death and dying, both the traditional and the contemporary vision and as palliative care have been treated in the job categories of medicine, social work, psychology and nursing. The methodology of this study consists of a literature review of articles located in the SciELO database, electronic journals and technical books related to the topic. The analysis of the articles pointed to a shortage of subjects that deal with the theme of death in professional curricula to few palliative care services in Brazilian society and barriers faced by this new look to the terminal patient. This research aims to broaden the discussion of palliative care in public health, and provide information for future studies that will address the theme.
