Abstract:

This paper analyses the end-of-life care in palliative care settings, exploring the tensions betwen a “more human” health care and the medicalization of the dying. The research on which the article is based follows a qualitative methodological approach, based on interviews with professionals and patients and ethnographic observations in a palliative care setting in the City of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The article describes the configuration of a personalized and holistic health care, core values of the more "human" end of life care promoted by palliative care supporters. Moreover, the paper analizes how these practices are mediated by the advance of medicalization process, in which the dimension of care is considered an area of technical skills and knowledges. The articles explores how, rather than opposites terms, the logics of care and medicalization works in a complementary fashion.
