Abstract:

The Covid-19 pandemic reached Brazil in a context of deepening political and economic crises that have deepened existing inequalities and vulnerabilities. Actions to support others were undertaken by individuals and organizations in order to mitigate the effects of the pandemic. Thirty-four interviews were conducted between October and November 2020 with the aim of identifying the support actions carried out to help others, analyzing them in terms of (pandemic) solidarity. Solidarity and individualism appeared frequently in the interviews as qualifiers of such actions. Furthermore, 3 nuclei were identified in which these actions were operated: the family, the condominium and the community. The family was mentioned as a form of mutual support, based on kinship. In the condominium, on the other hand, actions were subdivided between the actions inside the walls (actions of mutual support among similar people) and outside the walls (which reveal the differentiation between the condominium and poorer places). The community demonstrates a more potent form of action, with experiences of self-management, mutual support and shared vulnerability. In this sense, the results encourage us to understand the solidarity as a method of transforming society, regardless of the presence of the state.
